"Anyone who has a continuous smile on his face conceals a toughness that is almost frightening." Greta Garbo
Sometimes disappointment comes at you like a slow moving wave, something you can see from the shore. Oh it's out there alright, but it's miles away. You never expect it has the power to engulf you. This is the type of disappointment that you can deal with, somehow rationalize. And although it's not any easier, this is often the sort of letdown that enables you to believe there is still time & power to change it, if you can only rally yourself quickly enough & muster up all the courage needed for a good fight.
And then there's the disappointment that comes from out of nowhere.
Left field,
"I never saw it coming" style .
No softening of the blow.
I hate that style.
Thinking today about disappointment & trying to remind myself of all the ways hurt can be positive. Hard to imagine anything that has the ability to knock the wind out of you has a positive side, but hey, work with me, I'm trying to be an optimist here;)
I think hurt breaks us to the core so that we can somehow find the courage to build ourselves back together, better..
Maybe letdowns are designed to make us slow down.
Maybe letdowns force us to notice the simplicity of life going on around us: Sunshine, the breeze. Gentle branches moving within the rhythm of the wind with zero effort.
The same lack of effort that enables our hearts to keep beating..
New hope. There's one born every minute
